Nearly two in three Americans (64%) worry more about running out of money than death.
Americans Fear Financial Instability More Than Death

According to a new survey, nearly two in three Americans (64%) report worrying more about running out of money than about dying. This figure highlights the financial anxiety many feel in today’s economy. Top contributors to this fear include high inflation, cited by just over half (54%) of respondents, concerns that Social Security will fall short (43%), and burdensome taxes (43%). The data paints a bleak picture of how economic pressures are reshaping the nation’s collective outlook.
Inflation Hits Older Generations Harder
While economic pressure affects all age groups, Boomers (61%) are more likely than Millennials (56%) or Gen Xers (55%) to cite high inflation as a factor behind their financial fears. With prices for necessities continuing to climb, many Americans find it increasingly difficult to feel secure about their financial futures. Inflation’s outsized impact on older generations suggests that even those nearing retirement are not immune to growing monetary stress.
Saving for Retirement Feels Out of Reach for Many
Saving for retirement remains a major challenge, with nearly two-thirds (62%) of Americans saying they are not saving as much as they would like. The most mentioned reason is that everyday expenses take priority, named by nearly two-thirds (63%) of respondents. Credit card debt (40%) and housing costs such as mortgage or rent payments (35%) also prevent many from setting aside money for the future. These findings underscore the tough financial balancing act that millions are facing daily.
